In Celia Laskey’s debut novel, Big Burr, Kansas has been named the most homophobic town in America. An LGBTQ organization, Acceptance Across America (AAA, for short) activates a task force of queer families to relocate to Big Burr to live and, hopefully, change minds. The AAA leader has a teenaged, straight daughter who finds it difficult to live in Big Burr. In spite of it’s reliance upon sterotypes on both sides of the political landscape, this novel brings a warmth and character driven narrative to the table in a book that is ultimately, a quick and hopeful read. A great summer read for Pride month.
