The Arsonists’ City beautifully weaves a modern family saga.  Idris and Mazna Nasr immigrated to the US from Lebanon.  Their three adult children live spread across the globe. When Idris’ father passes away, the family reunites in Beirut at the family home.  The story that unfolds shines a spotlight on Middle East relations, particularly the divide between Lebanon and Syria (Mazna’s country of origin).  The novel slowly unveils the backstory of how Idris and Mazna came to marry while alternating point of view to introduce each of the three Nasr adult children and their individual struggles.  These complex and flawed characters tug at the heartstrings and I was rooting for each of them.  This empathetic novel, at turns, funny and sad, will certainly be one of my favorite reads of 2021.
