Family Law – Gin Phillips

Decatur Book Festival Summer Reading Series with Joshilyn Jackson and Nicki Salcedo kicks off this evening!

Tonight, Gin Phillips is in conversation with Joshilyn Jackson to discuss her latest novel, Family Law.  Set in 1979 Alabama, Family Law refers to the legal practice of Lucia Gilbert, a fiercely feminist divorce attorney who fights for women in divorce cases.  Rachel, a teenaged neighbor, idolizes Lucia and often compares Lucia to her much more timid mother.  Lucia’s work endangers both women and creates the propulsive plot that fills the reader with dread, much like the author’s earlier Fierce Kingdom. But, it’s the exploration of women’s interactions — their conflict and mutual support — where this narrative shines.
