Made in China – Anna Qu

August New Release!

In this heart-wrenching memoir, Anna Qu details her arrival in America; years after her mother abandoned her in China to live with her Grandparents.  Dropped as a teen into NYC, Qu lived with her mother, her stepfather, and her younger half siblings (neither of whom she had previously met). Her story reads very closely to early chapters of the traditional Cinderella tale.  As an outsider, beholden to her stepfather’s generosity, she receives few of the privileges that her half siblings enjoy and is required to work in her step-father’s sweatshop and take care of the house and the younger children.  Eventually, due to her continued mistreatment, she reports her mother to family services.  Years later, she reaches a shaky détente with her mother. As an adult, Qu requests a copy of her case report and finds the facts as stated to be significantly different from the abuse that she recalls, which leads her to write this book in order to explore the nature of truth and trauma.

I received an advanced copy of this memoir from the publisher via Netgalley. Thanks!
