We’re Going to Need More Wine – Gabrielle Union

~~ Month of Memoirs ~~

Celebrity Memoir Week!!!

Gabrielle Union’s We’re Going to Need More Wine sounds like it’s going to be a binge drinking, pillow fighting, girl’s-night-out of a book.  But, underestimating Union, you will soon find out, is a big mistake. Instead this book of essays gets very real about rape and sexual assault (massive trigger warnings here); race; sexism; power and female friendships and competition.  She handles all of the seriousness of these topics with confidence and honesty, and yet, it’s not a preachy or heavy-handed treatment.  Her tone strikes more of an attitude of a close friend getting real and holding your hand.  She handles life’s smaller challenges with the same grace and vulnerability.

Tip:  I listened to this on audio, read by the author and it was fantastic.  This book claims to be an essay collection, and it may be, but the audio flowed so well, I didn’t realize that this is a collection of shorter pieces.
