The Majesties – Tiffany Tsao

Out in Paperback Now

The Majesties begins in the aftermath of a mass murder.  Doll lies in a hospital, the only survivor of her sister, Estella’s poisoning of their extended family.  Doll recounts their upbringing in a wealthy Chinese Indonesian family and the girls’ move to California to attend college.  Their experience in the US illuminates the prejudice and stereotyping that minorities in this country endure.  Doll’s reminiscing, leads back to the initial crime in a dark and twisty way.  The set up leads to comparisons to Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, and there are certainly some similarities.  But, The Majesties has a creepier quality that makes the humor much darker (think Shirley Jackson) and even more enjoyable.
