Brian Broome’s brilliant memoir follows two parallel tracks. In one, Broome more traditionally explores his own story beginning with his childhood and growing up in a small conservative town as both Black and gay. In the parallel story, the author sees a black man and his son interact at a bus stop and this narrative explores the larger implications of his personal story as they relate to toxic masculinity, Black fatherhood, and homophobia in the Black community. Broome writes lyrically and readers will feel the urgency of his call for empathy and social justice.
